Backyard Courtyard Landscape Design (Glenelg North).
A newly retired couple living amongst one of Adelaide’s picturesque western suburbs, down by the beach at Glenelg were after a backyard makeover. Their current back courtyard area was a blank slate, containing weeds and a few old pavers. After searching for professional landscape designers to help with ideas and transform the rear garden area into a beautiful space to relax and enjoy, they came across Living Pictures By Tony Stanton and booked a concept design session.
During the discussion for the courtyard landscape design, Tony asked the clients a number of questions, finding out what their vision was and what they wanted to use the rear courtyard for.
Towards the end, after fully understanding what the objectives were, the client’s likes and dislikes of styles and colors, and what features and garden design elements were wanted, Tony started drawing up a concept sketch that showed what the area could look like after all the landscaping work was finished for their backyard makeover.
The couple were delighted with what was discussed for their courtyard landscape design and the shared vision Tony Stanton had drawn for them, so requested he proceed with drawing up scaled plans that detailed all the work landscapers and other trades would follow to complete the project.
Two working drawings were produced:
Hardscape plans show all the construction work to be completed. For this formal style courtyard design, lightweight rendered polystyrene walls would be erected along the back and corners with rendered Hebel walls in front to form the base for hardwood timber seating and planter boxes that would extend along the left-hand side fence and act as a return for the right.
Large format square pavers with Granite setts would be laid to form an attractive path from the house to the rear gate. A statue outside the gate and multiple tiered bowl water fountain inside were two of the garden design elements chosen to provide focal points within this backyard makeover.
The hardscape construction plans also detail the posts and wire mesh for climbing plants, garden lighting, and details of the irrigation system to be installed to water the plants, natural lawn, and for the pump to the water fountain along with the landscape quantities required to complete all of the physical landscaping work.
The softscape plan lists all of the plants, their location, and the number required. For this courtyard landscape design, Orange Jessamine would be the backdrop for the Korean Box planted out inside the Hebel planter boxes.
2 ‘Chinese Star Jasmine’ would be planted behind the large feature statue with 2 ‘Fastigiate Purple Leaf Plum’ on either side
Natural, ‘Male Sterile Kikuyu’ was chosen for the lawn due to it being lower maintenance than many grasses on the market, its drought tolerant properties, and its lush green look all year round.
After showing the clients the final plans, they asked Tony to handle all the logistics involved in completing the project.
Hand Made Gardens were the chosen landscapers trusted to complete all of the landscaping construction, due to their high standard of workmanship and experience with the type of work this project called for.
Executing the plans landscape design to the smallest detail, the final result delighted the clients who now had their dream, a reality.
These images were taken straight after the plants were added.
Only once the plants have matured (3 years) can the final outcome of the professional landscape design produced by Tony Stanton be fully appreciated.
